Madeira’s legendary PR1 mountain trail is open again — with repaired sections, improved infrastructure and some important new rules for hikers.
For anyone who loves hiking in Madeira, there is exciting news: the famous PR1 Vereda do Areeiro, connecting Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo, has reopened following extensive recovery and improvement work.
The trail is one of Madeira’s most spectacular mountain routes, crossing the dramatic central mountain range and connecting two of the island’s highest peaks. After a long period of restrictions and repair work, hikers can once again experience much of this iconic route.
A major return for one of Madeira’s most famous trails
The full PR1 reopened in 2026 following significant intervention on the trail. The reopening followed damage and safety concerns associated with the severe mountain conditions and previous wildfire-related impacts.
According to Madeira’s Instituto das Florestas e Conservação da Natureza (IFCN), the complete PR1 became available again from 1 May 2026, with further works continuing during the following months. The aim has been to improve safety, the quality of the route and the sustainability of the trail. (IFCN Madeira)
One of the most noticeable changes is the introduction of a one-way system on part of the route.
What has changed on PR1?
The route is no longer operated in exactly the same way as before.
Between Pico do Areeiro and the Miradouro da Pedra Rija, hikers can still travel in both directions.
From Pedra Rija towards Pico Ruivo, however, the trail operates one way only: Pico do Areeiro → Pico Ruivo. This arrangement has been introduced as part of the safety management of the restored route. (IFCN Madeira)
This means that anyone planning to complete the full hike needs to think about transport before setting off.
Once you reach Pico Ruivo, you cannot simply turn around and walk the entire PR1 back to Pico do Areeiro. Hikers must leave Pico Ruivo using one of the designated alternative routes, including PR1.1 Vereda da Ilha or PR1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo. (IFCN Madeira)
New infrastructure along the trail
The recent works have included improvements designed to make sections of the route safer and more durable.
Further intervention was scheduled in September 2026, including the installation of a walkway/passadiço in one of the areas being worked on. For this reason, the section between Pedra Rija and Pico Ruivo was temporarily closed on 14–17 September and 21–22 September 2026. (IFCN Madeira)
These temporary closures demonstrate that the restoration of PR1 is not simply about reopening the trail. Madeira is continuing to invest in the infrastructure needed to cope with the demanding mountain environment and the large number of visitors using the route.
What should hikers expect?
PR1 remains a serious mountain hike rather than an easy walking trail.
The route takes hikers through steep and exposed mountain terrain, with spectacular views across Madeira’s peaks and valleys. Weather can also change rapidly at altitude, so appropriate footwear, water, food, warm clothing and weather protection remain essential.
The new one-way system also means that hikers should plan their day carefully.
Your journey begins at Pico do Areeiro and continues towards Pico Ruivo. Once you reach the highest point, you need to continue via one of the designated exit routes and have your return transport organised.
The IFCN specifically states that hikers are responsible for their own transport arrangements and that it does not provide transport back to Pico do Areeiro. (IFCN Madeira)
Booking is now part of the experience
Another important change for visitors is that access to classified hiking routes is subject to the Madeira authorities’ registration and reservation system.
The PR1 requires prior registration through the SIMplifica platform, and the current 2026 system includes fees and controlled access. (IFCN Madeira)
The official IFCN information should therefore be checked before travelling, particularly because trail conditions and temporary closures can change.
Why the reopening matters
PR1 is more than just another hiking trail.
The route from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo is one of Madeira’s signature outdoor experiences. Its dramatic ridgelines, tunnels, stairways, volcanic peaks and enormous views make it a highlight for experienced hikers visiting the island.
The reopening means visitors can once again experience this spectacular mountain crossing while using infrastructure that has been repaired and adapted to modern safety requirements.
For Madeira, it is also an important balance between protecting a fragile mountain environment and allowing people to enjoy one of the island’s most extraordinary landscapes.
Planning your PR1 adventure
If you’re planning to hike PR1, don’t simply arrive at Pico do Areeiro and start walking.
Before your trip:
- Check the latest IFCN trail status.
- Make your required reservation through SIMplifica.
- Check the weather forecast for the mountains.
- Allow plenty of time for the hike.
- Wear proper hiking shoes.
- Carry sufficient water and food.
- Bring warm and waterproof clothing.
- Plan your transport from Pico Ruivo in advance.
- Follow all signs, barriers and instructions from the trail authorities.
Most importantly, remember that mountain conditions can change quickly, even when the trail is officially open.
A new chapter for Madeira’s iconic mountain trail
The repaired and upgraded PR1 represents a new chapter for one of Madeira’s most famous hiking routes.
The spectacular journey from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo is once again available, but hikers need to understand the new one-way arrangements and plan their transportation and booking accordingly.
For anyone visiting Madeira with a love of mountains, the return of PR1 is a major reason to put the island’s high peaks back on the hiking itinerary.
The mountains are waiting — but check the official trail conditions before you go.
